Unlock the smithy to buy and equip armor and weapons. Spend as much gold as possible on upgrades at every chance, either on the Manor's upgrades or buying from the Smithy and Enchantress, since any remaining gold will be lost before re-entering the castle, unless the Haggle upgrade has been purchased, wich will allow you to keep a fraction of your gold, depending on the upgrade's level.
